5/29/2023 0 Comments Strike by Delilah S. DawsonFrancis Dolarhyde seeks to transform into the Red Dragon and gets a full-body tattoo-and kills several people-as part of his process. In some stories, a character’s transformation is overt and visible. For me, a big part of determining my story’s climax and ending is figuring out how the character will change from the beginning of the book to the final page. Even if you’re a pantser and have lots of scenes, details, and characters to discover along the way, most writers have a better chance of reaching the finish line if they know where to aim. Once you’ve nailed down this foundation and you’ve begun to get a feel for the book overall, it can help to decide how the story will end. Whichever one comes first, your job is to create a perfectly balanced triangle in which your story could only happen to this particular character in a setting that uniquely challenges them. When you alight on a story idea, it’s generally either in the form of a character, a setting, or a hook. 5/29/2023 0 Comments Zero K by Don DeLilloShould we have to die in the same manner? Isn’t it a human glory to refuse to accept a certain fate?” These are the questions that haunt the novel and its memorable characters, and it is Ross Lockhart, most particularly, who feels a deep need to enter another dimension and awake to a new world. Jeff joins Ross and Artis at the compound to say “an uncertain farewell” to her as she surrenders her body. Ross is the primary investor in a remote and secret compound where death is exquisitely controlled and bodies are preserved until a future time when biomedical advances and new technologies can return them to a life of transcendent promise. Jeffrey Lockhart’s father, Ross, is a billionaire in his sixties, with a younger wife, Artis Martineau, whose health is failing. A New York Times bestseller, “DeLillo’s haunting new novel, Zero K-his most persuasive since his astonishing 1997 masterpiece, Underworld” ( The New York Times), is a meditation on death and an embrace of life. 5/29/2023 0 Comments Koushun takamiHow did we get here? The battle royale genre didn’t start with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or Minecraft survival mods or The Hunger Games. Since PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and DayZ popularized the genre, Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode catapulted it into the zeitgeist, Apex Legends proved the format could adapt, and Tetris 99 extended the philosophy beyond shooters, major gaming studios are turning to “last player standing” gameplay hooks in order to build a player base.Īs the genre continues to dominate attention, transfixing players with its last-man-standing hook, the origins of the battle royale become blurrier and blurrier. The battle royale genre is a black hole from which no franchise is safe. Thus begins Elise Stoke’s new fun-filled, action-packed, adventure series, perfect for teens and tweens summer reading, where a young girl’s senses are transformed overnight. Cassidy frantically clutched the counter, overturning beakers of “hot liquid” that then pooled and “instantaneously vaporized, forming a white cloud.”Īt that moment Cassidy gasped for air and took a crucial breath then…blackness overtook her. Shortly after her father began the stool gave way without warning. She joins her news anchor father on what she thought would be a “boring” interview with Professor Serena Phillips, a brilliant geneticist who invents unusual secret formulas.ĭuring the interview Cassidy sat off to the side on a rickety stool with nearby laboratory beakers merrily bubbling atop small burners, sending up wisps of smoke. Like many fourteen-year-olds, Cassidy Jones is shy and a bit insecure, her “entire goal…” to stay in the background, so as “not to attract attention.” And she did just that until… (NOTE: Gail Welborn's review had been published in The Seattle Examiner, The Washington Examiner, The Cypress Times, and Christian News Northwest. One brilliant Saturday, I went to pick up a package from the post office. As the foreseen date of their impending doom draws near, the town decides to put on a festival on that very same night, to celebrate their lives and face whatever fate awaits them together. 'Con Temor, Con Ternura': For years, the residents of a small, ocean-side town have been living in the shadow of the sleeping giant who is prophesised to one day wake up and lay their world to waste. Alive but trapped, an engineer who survives the wreckage finds herself inside the reservoir of memories, stranded alone in a patchwork dream of someone else's life. 'What Is Left': A ship that runs on the memories of one of its occupants malfunctions and collapses in on itself in the dead of space. But, unknown to them, each time they gain a morsel of information, they lose something, too. The lovers get separated, and must barter with stories in exchange for clues as to where the other may be. 'Don't Go Without Me': Two lovers sneak out for a night out on the town- a town where spirits and the supernatural exist as a realm within and alongside our world, with humans crossing over frequently. 'Don't Go Without Me' contains 3 individual stories: the titular 'Don't Go Without Me,' 'What Is Left,' and 'Con Temor, Con Ternura' (With Fear, With Tenderness). ShortBox is proud to present 'Don't Go Without Me' a triptych collection of comic stories from rising superstar cartoonist Rosemary Valero-O'Connell. Mark Adams has spent his career editing adventure and travel magazines, so his plan to investigate the allegations against Bingham by retracing the explorer's perilous path to Machu Picchu isn't completely far- fetched, even if it does require him to sleep in a tent for the first time. Nearly a century later, news reports have recast the hero explorer as a villain who smuggled out priceless artifacts and stole credit for finding one of the world's greatest archaeological sites. For on that rainy morning, the young Yale professor Hiram Bingham III climbed into the Andes Mountains of Peru and encountered an ancient city in the clouds: the now famous citadel of Machu Picchu. July 24, 1911, was a day for the history books. What happens when an adventure travel expert-who's never actually done anything adventurous-tries to re-create the original expedition to Machu Picchu? 5/28/2023 0 Comments Doubts by Sunhawk16Instead, it came out as 'Hey, you wanna get together as more than friends at dinner some time?'Īnd even then, he rushed the words out so quickly Heero needed him to repeat himself a couple of times before he understood. Brief Summary of Book: Saving Yesterday (TimeShifters, #1) by Jessica Keller 5/28/2023 0 Comments Infamous by lex croucherGleeful and unruly, Infamous brings Gen Z zeitgeist to some seriously hilarious Regency angst. Her family! I'm an absolute sucker for a good ramshackle family and I would have happily spent several hundred pages alone hanging out with Eddie and her siblings. I utterly fell for Eddie, laughing out loud at almost every page, swept up in the giddy riot of her thoughts, her feelings, her family. Lex Croucher's voice and style have really established themselves here and I thought this book was gorgeous - funny, furious, romantic. I really enjoyed Reputation, but I think Infamous knocks it out of the water. So much fun! - Sarra Manningįerociously witty and joyously unrepentant, Infamous wraps a rollicking story of regency revelry excess around a heart of queer love and the power of self-authorship * Kat Dunne * I didn't want it to end - Laura Kayīridgerton's wild little sister. Infamous is everything I wanted and more - it's witty, whip-smart and full of characters I totally fell for. |
